Meta Analysis

This webinar is given in two sessions of approximately 90 minutes per session. The fees for
the combined sessions are provided below. You are invited to attend both sessions which are
recorded. If you are unable to attend one or both, the recordings will be made available to you
at no additional charge.

Part I: Research Synthesis Methods in Support of Evidence-Based Decision Making:
Systematic Reviews in Context of Meta-Analysis

Part II: Understanding Effectiveness Research: Introduction to Meta-Analysis

Part I: Research Synthesis Methods in Support of Evidence-Based Decision Making:
Systematic Reviews in Context of Meta-Analysis

There is an increasing momentum to adopt more systematic, transparent and valid
approaches when using diverse sources of research knowledge to make informed decisions.
Concurrently, research (knowledge) synthesis methods (e.g. systematic review, meta-
analysis) have become the corner stones of policy and decision making in health, business,
socio-political and other sectors.

Learning objectives:

Understand the principles of research synthesis and translation science
Become familiar with the frequently used research synthesis method
Learn to distinguish between traditional, expert-based commentaries or narrative reviews and
systematic reviews
Understand the principles of systematic review process, from question formulation to data
extraction and summarisation or data synthesis
Become aware of critical appraisal and how to discriminate between solid and poor science
Understand benefits of systematic review-meta-analysis approach when evaluating ‘treatment
efficacy’, using practical examples
Learn what to expect from consultants doing systematic review-meta-analysis for your
company (team) and how to evaluate published systematic review-meta-analysis
Be able to decide when it’s appropriate to use these methods

Part II: Understanding Effectiveness Research: Introduction to Meta-Analysis

Meta-analysis is statistical tool increasingly used to evaluate effectiveness of interventions
(treatments, practices, technologies) in health and other sectors. A set of statistical methods
is used for pooling reported results from several similar studies (e.g. studies investigating the
same treatment under similar conditions), and when appropriate, to generate more precise
pooled effect estimates or examine heterogeneity across studies.

Learning objectives:

Understand the importance of systematic review in context of meta-analysis
Brief refresher on some effect size and association measures
Become familiar with fixed and random effect models
Become aware of heterogeneity, publication bias (this aspect will depend on time)
Appraisal and use of meta-analysis reports/publications
Become aware of software for meta-analysis

Who will benefit:

Professionals, decision makers and applied researchers, from health (clinical and public
health), bio-technology, food safety/veterinary public health and any other sector, identifying,
evaluating summarising and interpreting data from diverse sources of research knowledge, or
informing those that make decisions.

Presenter - Dr. Andrijana Rajić

Dr. Andrijana Rajić is an international leader in the application of research synthesis tools to
answer complex questions related to food safety and veterinary public health. She earned a
DVM degree from University of Sarajevo; two Master’s degrees, one in Infectious Diseases
(University of Sarajevo) and Epidemiology (University of Guelph, Canada); and a PhD degree
in Epidemiology (University of Guelph). She has over 20 years of professional experience in
food safety, animal and public health, and has worked for various national, provincial and
federal authorities in Europe and Canada. Dr. Rajić has served on the Expert Panel for
Systematic Reviews in Feed and Food Safety of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).
She is an Adjunct Faculty member at University of Guelph and University of Saskatchewan,
Canada. Dr. Rajić has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
