| Food Labeling for Sweetness (Webinar length: 1 hr 24 min) Overview: This webinar will cover minimally required labeling, regulations and rulings for optional claims and statements about sugar and sweeteners including relevant carbohydrate declarations. It will also address contemporary food policy and public health issues with insights to help avoid a bittersweet backlash from labeling gone sour. Katie Couric’s “Fed-Up” movie challenge, taxing state and local laws, possible warning labels on sugary beverages and restricted serving sizes and the proposed “added sugars” section in the Nutrition Facts label are all continuing evidence of serious concerns about sugar in the food supply. Genetically modified (GMO) ingredient avoidance also drives demand for sourcing from cane over beet or corn. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the new sweetener Advantame, proposed draft guidance for honey labeling and reopened the comment period on draft guidance for the ingredient name “evaporated cane juice” following lawsuits over its labeled use. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also established a recommended daily maximum for dietary sugar. Labeling to satisfy a sweet tooth can be challenging amidst anti-sugar shock sentiment. Controversy rages over the safety of non-nutritive sweeteners and the health implications of added sugar making ingredient names, nutrient content claims and quality descriptors for finished products a crucial influence on the sweet choices used to tastefully meet consumer expectations. Areas to be addressed: Consumer concerns – what the buying public thinks of it all Sugar consumption and product categories, relevant health issues FDA regulations for sugar and carbohydrates in the current and proposed Nutrition Facts label Sugar nutrient content claims; whatever happened to “low carb”? Ingredient labeling - Standards of identity, common/usual names for sweetening agents Natural and GMO status for non-nutritive sugar alternatives and functional sweeteners Updates on controversies – High-Fructose Corn Syrup, “Evaporated cane juice”, “Net Impact” Carbs Implications for fruit and juice concentrate sweeteners Added vs Inherent sugar – professional viewpoints and consumer usefulness Tax Laws, proposed warning labels and possible size restrictions for sugary products WHO, public health and advocacy advisory on recommended amounts Who will benefit from this webinar: Regulatory Affairs and Compliance Professionals QA and QC Managers Food Scientists, Technologists and Product Developers Government food inspectors Consumer and Marketing Research Professionals Advertising, Brand, Marketing and Public Relations Managers Legal Consultants and Professionals Dietitians and Nutritionists Presenter--Lauren Swann: Lauren Swann is President of Concept Nutrition, Inc., specializing in strategies to effectively deliver accurate nutrition messages for industry, media and public health by providing food labeling & nutrient analyses.
