Product Development Manager

Position Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director RD of a frozen food manufacturer. The RD group is responsible for developing products from concept to commercialization. The Product Development Manager plays a key role in delivering excellence in product development and production quality execution to ensure flavor, functionality and innovation. Help lead and guide the development of culinary and science driven frozen food products that deliver on quality, cost, and commercialization expectations. Act as a department leader and educator for the Product Development Team and within the company. Agility in delivering exceptional product quality on aggressive timelines. A sense of urgency with high quality output is essential to the success of this position. Basic understanding of ingredient functionality, food science, and processing for optimal development of the specified product application. Ability to translate internal and customer direction into products that meet the financial, flavor, and functionality goals. Uphold best practices for bench top development, formulations, and lab standards. Inspire the organization with culinary vision and innovative product concepts. Work closely with Regulatory and Labeling Specifications teams to ensure all regulatory, nutritional, labeling goals are achieved through development. Collaborate with Commercialization and Operation teams to ensure an efficient translation of product formulas production facilities. Deliver on flavor, financial, and timing expectations, always. Acquire and apply industry ingredient and equipment technologies. Partner with ingredient and co-manufacture vendors to achieve development goals. Explore alternative solutions, research questions, and find the best possible solutions. Educate internal and external partners on food trend, technologies, and processes. Act as a leader and ambassador for Product Development, RD.

Background Required:

  • Food product development and/or commercialization (10 years)
  • Manufacturing experience via RD, plant operations, commercialization, etc. (3 years)
  • Manage product development from concept to commercialization
  • Able to design for flavor, functionality and innovation
  • Best practices for development, formulations and lab standards
  • Understanding of regulatory, labeling specification to USDA, FDA and all regulatory agency standards
  • Familiarity with Gluten Free, non-GMO, low fat, low carb, sodium reduction, and religious dietary guidelines is a beneficial
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Comfortable learning new data management systems.
  • Proven track record of leading successful teams
  • Travel 20% to 40%
  • Education: BS Food Science or similar degree
  • Residence: Minneapolis, MN Background Preferred (but not required):
  • Frozen Food in USDA/FDA facility
  • Culinary experience or education
  • SAP experience
